Most challenges in oversized transportation happen far from the major highways. Residential streets create unique challenges for oversized transportation projects. Tight turns, narrow roads, overhead utility lines, and live traffic all require careful planning and constant communication.

In heavy haul transportation, even the smallest details can impact the success of a move.

Lifting Lines & Clearing Signs

Scott-Woods Transport recently completed the transportation of a large pipe rack module for the oil and gas sector in partnership with Mammoet. The project showcased the level of coordination required behind complex oversized transportation moves.

The oversized pipe rack measured approximately 128 ft long, 14’6” wide, and 17’3” high, making it a highly specialized heavy haul load. Because of the height of the shipment, the move required more than 60 overhead utility line lifts. Scott-Woods coordinated closely with local hydro, telecommunications, and utility providers throughout the route.

In addition to lifting lines, traffic signs along the route needed to be temporarily rotated or removed with professional assistance. This helped create safe clearance for the load to move through residential areas and tight intersections efficiently.

Why Communication Matters on Oversized Moves

Scott-Woods worked closely with local police departments, escort teams, and utility crews throughout the move. These teams helped manage traffic control, public safety, and route navigation along the route.

Because of the height of the load, utility coordination became one of the most important parts of the project. Crews worked ahead of the convoy throughout the route to temporarily lift overhead lines as the module safely passed underneath. At one point during the move, coordination involved 11 different hydro, utility, and telecommunications companies working together along the route.

Without constant communication between all parties involved, even small delays or missteps could have impacted traffic flow, public safety, and the overall timing of the move. Careful coordination and real-time communication helped keep the oversized transportation project moving safely and efficiently through the residential areas along the route.

The Team Behind the Move

To maneuver the module safely through tight areas and along the planned route, the team utilized a specialized hydraulic steerable trailer configuration designed for heavy haul and over-dimensional transportation projects. As a result, the equipment provided the maneuverability and support needed to navigate challenging road conditions and restricted spaces safely.

Projects like this highlight what it truly takes to move oversized freight through residential streets safely and efficiently. From route surveys and utility coordination to line lifts and on-road execution, successful heavy haul transportation projects rely on experienced crews, detailed planning, and constant communication every step of the way.
